Time for Lunch on the Nourish Network

There’s a new food site out there I’ve just started writing for. Called Nourish Network, it has a strong focus on healthy, fresh, tasty food with plenty of eye candy too. Here’s what the site’s publisher, Lia Huber, had to say in the intro to my first piece (she calls me “talented!”).

It seems I’m meant to talk about kids’ lunches right now. This past Tuesday, I did a segment on ABC-TV’s View from the Bay on making healthy lunches fun for kids. But even better than peanut butter banana spirals is the fact that, right now, we have an opportunity to be a part of re-framing the school lunch program in America. Here to tell us all about it and how we can get involved is one of our talented new Contributors, Kurt Michael Friese.

Follow Me Anywhere

Who knew this Twitter thing would get as wildly popular as it has? Call it what you will: Revolution, fad, curiosity, or simply blogging for the ADHD set, Twitter is everywhere these days online and in the MSM. Yours truly is also both victim and perpetrator in the Twitter conspiracy, having first learned of it through a CNN report a couple years ago of a man who used it to inform his friends he’s been picked up by Egyptian police (the State Dept. had him out in a couple days). I have a few accounts under my nimble little thumbs where you can follow me:

@KurtMFriese – This is my main account, where just about anything I have to share (or scream into the Twitter abyss) will be posted, from my postings on this and other sites to tidbits on food politics, even family news and stuff I find funny on the interwebs.

@Winetwit – Exclusive to my wine writing, mostly for the Iowa City Press-Citizen

@Devotay – Here you’ll find all things Devotay, my downtown Iowa City restaurant. Hopefully soon we’ll have the kinks worked out so we can post our features every day, along with news and upcoming events that are already there. We also promote local food issues/events here.

@EdibleIA – The official Twitter site of Edible Iowa River Valley, Iowa’s go-to resource for all things local/sustainable/delicious. We’ll “tweet” the roll outs of new issues, offer previews, and upload photos of great food finds.

@SlowFoodIC – This is the official account of Slow Food Iowa City. Follow along as we Preserve and Revitalize the Flavors of the Heartland. Event announcements, etc. flow through here.

Let’s (re)do school lunch | Grist

There has been a cultural revolution in this country over the last 50 to 75 years, a sort of intellectual cleansing that has removed from most people’s minds any understanding of food, of cooking, of the pleasures of the kitchen and table, and replaced it with the language of the drive-thru, the shopping mall, and the convenience store. Michael Pollan recently addressed this problem well.

Nowhere is this more evident than in our schools, where our kids are not taught about food and cooking, not even the “Home Economics” of my high school years. No, instead the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) teaches something called “Family and Consumer Science.” There you have it—we are not raising citizens, we are raising consumers. Our children are being taught one way of surviving in this modern, fast-paced world: the way of conspicuous consumption.

Table Wine: Open your palate to Fireside

The Fireside Winery in Marengo is one of the newest wineries in the state, but it quickly has become one of the most popular. In just four short years, William and Rona Wyant have built one of the most popular spots on the wine trails.

Located just a quick drive north of the Williamsburg outlet mall, the beautiful facility stands on former corn and soybean fields just south of Marengo. Here they grow native and hybrid grapes for a variety of tastes.
