Kurt Friese, the owner of Devotay Restaurant & Bar and publisher of the local food magazine Edible Iowa, has submitted his nomination papers and will be a candidate for Johnson County Supervisor in the Democratic Party Primary election June 7. 100 signatures were required to be on the ballot, Friese submitted 392.
Friese, a life-long Democrat, promotes the preservation of farmland in the North Corridor from residential development and removal of barriers to local food production. He also advocates for increased civility in county government, which he says will bring better cooperation with cities and schools to accomplish needed progress.
Friese has a long record of business and managerial skills from 20 years at Devotay, helping Shelter House to create its foodservice apprenticeship program for clients, and as Director of Local Food and Advocacy at NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids. "I know what it takes to meet a payroll, and I know how it feels not to," he said.
